Canada received its first medal in athletics on the first day of competition when Kajaks' Canadian record holder Caroline Wittrin received the bronze for her throw in women's hammer. Caroline threw 61.67m to improve for the forth time the Canadian record and claim the third place.

Dr. Doug Clement, the club founder and longtime coach, unexpectedly became ill on May 17, 1998.
